Invest in a programmable thermostat.  This way you can lower the
temperature at night and when you are at work and save gas. You can you
also reverse the trend in the summer. Turn off air conditioning when you
are not home.

Lower the temperature on your hot water heater. A 5 or 10 degree
difference is barely noticeable but can help you save energy and money.

When buying new appliances in your home, look for ones that are energy
star efficient. They can reduce the energy used by up to 35%.

Limit the use of fireplaces in your home. You might be surprised to know
that fireplaces actually suck the heat out of your home. Also, when your
fireplace is not in use, make sure to close the damper.

Make sure not to cover your heating vents or radiators with furniture or
carpet. When the vents are covered, the heating system has to work twice
as hard to heat the home.

Use your curtains! Keep your curtains open during the day and let the sun
help heat your home. Close your curtains at night and it will help keep the
heat in.

Check the duct work in your home. If the ducts are not connected correctly
they can lose half of the heat before it even gets into your living areas.

When using your dishwasher, cut out the heat dry cycle. Let the dishes air
dry in the dishwasher.

Washing your clothes in cold water can get them just as clean and save
you money.

Buy an insulation jacket for your electric water heater. It will help keep the
hot water hot without using as much electricity.

Replace your light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs
